The Souls of Righteous Ones Now Rest
This hymn was written in 2018 for All Souls’ Day at the School of Theology in Sewanee. While not shown here, the text is set to a unique tune by Ken Miller, Peeler. It has a different structure and rhyming pattern. My hope is that the repeated alleluias in each stanza will join our song at the grave: alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
The souls of righteous ones now rest
in God, at peace and ever blessed.
Into new life they grow,
immersed in Love they sing:
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
Their righteousness was not their own
but Christ’s, who on them grace bestowed.
His death made Death to die;
his rising makes them rise.
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
From strength to strength in Wind of Love
they rise up into God above,
into the heart of God,
into their Source, the Word.
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
As bread and wine are given and blessed
we gain a glimpse of their glad rest.
In Christ they feast with us;
in Christ we sing with them:
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
